Vasile Lungu, the manager of "Domeniile Lungu", says that he opted for the rehabilitation of irrigation systems from the very first years of his business, understanding the key role that water plays in agricultural success.

"In 2001, when I decided to invest in a private farm, I located my land on a former irrigated area, where there had been an irrigation system since the 1980s. The system was destroyed, so we gradually started to restore the infrastructure, to invest in equipment, in the past this was aluminium, it required labour and supervision. Visiting different international fairs, we discovered new types of machines - linear and swivel. In 2003 we bought our first three linear machines. Later, the terrible droughts of 2007 and then 2012 clearly showed us the need to invest much more in irrigation," Vasile Lungu told us.

They've made essential upgrades to infrastructure, including pumping stations and transmission pipelines, and last year's drought has prompted them to invest to provide irrigation over even larger areas.

"Last year on an area of 350 hectares we achieved an average production of 350 kilograms of grain without irrigation, while on areas with access to irrigation the production was 11 tonnes. So, from almost 80% irrigated areas, thanks to last year's investments, we have reached 92%".

He has opted for irrigation pivots from Romania's only factory producing irrigation pivots - Variant Irrigation, whose distributor is Titan Machinery. Now, he says it was the right decision.
"I chose Variant Irrigation, even though I found it challenging at first, I already had 28 installations from other companies. We studied the data sheet very well, so we chose these pivots because of the higher water flow, which allows us to irrigate crops in a shorter time. While other types of pivots cover the surface of a circle in five days, Variant Irrigation's pivots cover the surface in 3-3.5 days, with the same water flow. This makes them more cost-effective. In addition, the price was satisfactory."

Purchased five pivot installations from 240 meters to 275 meters. These have been in operation since late May and the farmer says the investment will pay for itself over the next few years.
"At the moment we are averaging about 8.4 tonnes/ha wheat, 4.58 t/ha oilseed rape. Next up is sunflower harvest, for which we hope to get a crop of over 4 tonnes/ha, and maize, for which we estimate a crop of over 12 tonnes/ha. It is clear that the irrigation system is doing its job and the investment is well worth it. The investment made will pay for itself, quickly, in a maximum of five years, and after that, another 20 years will bring us a profit, and most importantly, will secure our activity", concluded Vasile Lungu.
